The Hal Company was started in the 90’s by Danusia Iwaszko in Camden Town London delivering drama workshops in the community and staging new and existing plays, all comers welcome from 18 to 80. Many young people went on to have successful careers in theatres and others gained confidence and self-expression skills, as well as lifelong friendships including marriages! After moving to Suffolk in 2000, Danusia continued the company as a co-op, and performed new writing at The Riverside Studios Hammersmith, The Cockpit Theatre London, The Mercury Theatre Colchester and Menagerie Theatre Cambridge. Plays included Headlands (ACE funded.) Still Small Voice (Heritage Lottery funded.)

The Hal Company has recently become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation to continue to tour plays highlighting marginalised groups’ stories and to deliver playwrighting workshops to these groups with the support and experience of a very qualified board of trustees. There are 6 trustees: The Chair, an ex director of Levi Strauss with extensive experience in marketing and diversity; the Treasurer: a very experienced accountant; the Secretary, a course director of a performing arts college; the Marketing and Publicity trustee, a journalist with UK wide contacts. Danusia Iwaszko is the CEO, who, at this time, does not draw a salary for the position, but finances herself with freelance work.
